A socially awkward comic book fan living in Detroit (Christian Slater) unexpectedly finds love with a woman (Patricia Arquette), which gives him the nerve to act tough. However, their newfound happiness is threatened when gangsters pursue them to Los Angeles, resulting in a violent confrontation. The film features an impressive supporting cast including Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Bronson Pinchot, and Saul Rubinek. "True Romance," released in 1993, is categorized as a crime drama, thriller, romance, and black comedy, and was directed by Tony Scott (Ridley Scott’s younger brother). The screenplay was penned by Quentin Tarantino, who sold it to finance his debut film “Reservoir Dogs” (1992). It incorporates the extreme violence and gore that have become associated with Tarantino's work, but presented in a satirical, comic book style which makes it entertaining rather than disturbing. Despite the exceptional cast and several memorable sequences, "True Romance" doesn’t quite reach the same heights as films like “Pulp Fiction” (1994) or “Jackie Brown” (1997). The main character's abrupt shift in personality feels unconvincing; his actions are reckless and dangerous—essentially foolish—which makes him seem a bit unsettling. That’s just my perspective, though. It’s similar to discovering an artist’s best album and then getting their previous release, which is enjoyable but not quite as impactful. You appreciate it, yet feel slightly disappointed. This is the feeling "True Romance" evokes when viewed after “Pulp Fiction.” Still, it's a worthwhile watch if you enjoy this type of movie. Tarantino originally wrote the script using a non-linear structure—a technique he’s known for—but Tony Scott opted to present the story chronologically and changed the ending, leading to a muddled moral message. Tarantino’s original vision would probably have been more effective, especially if he had directed it himself. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, and was filmed in Detroit and around Los Angeles. GRADE: B-
