Arnold Schwarzenegger and Cameron reunite for a wildly entertaining action film. In True Lies, Arnold Schwarzenegger portrays Harry Tasker, who leads a double life: to his wife Helen (Jaimie Lee Curtis) and daughter Dana (Eliza Dushku), he presents himself as an ordinary computer salesman, but secretly he’s a top spy working for a clandestine American agency. A series of events begins when Harry is led to suspect that Helen is unfaithful, ultimately exposing him and leading them both into a dangerous encounter with a ruthless terrorist. Any concerns about sexism or portraying Arab terrorists in a cliché manner (Art Malik's performance is so over-the-top it’s almost absurd) aside, True Lies doesn’t seem overly concerned with political sensitivity. Cameron focuses on delivering thrills—chases, stunts, and explosions—while maintaining a playful tone throughout. The film demonstrates Cameron’s exceptional talent for crafting action sequences, clearly leaving no expense unspent in the process, but still making excellent use of Harrier Jets, helicopters, and even horse-drawn elevators. A hilarious script provides Tom Arnold and Bill Paxton with opportunities to shine comedically; together these elements contributed to a worldwide box office gross of almost $264 million. The film is aware of its own absurdity, but it's the enjoyable kind that Hollywood can provide. True Lies is consistently entertaining and undeniably great fun, earning a rating of 7.5/10.
