Let’s begin somewhere. A positive aspect is certainly the clever use of computer-generated imagery within this historical drama. The film provides considerable scope and spectacle; the naval sequences and battles are well-executed, and the detail in costumes and props is remarkable. However, the acting feels disjointed. It's reminiscent of the Dutch national football team from the eighties – many talented individuals but lacking a sense of unity. Peter O’Toole lends some weight to his role as Priam, yet generally it’s a group of well-known actors giving their best effort with a choppy script and somewhat awkward direction. While not quite as poor as some critics have suggested if you consider it as an action film, the movie really needed more focus on developing the characters. Brian Cox is disappointing as Agamemnon; Brad Pitt (Achilles) and especially Eric Bana (Hector) seem stiff; Orlando Bloom (Paris) & Garrett Hedlund (Patroclus) are just present for visual appeal, and Diane Kruger, playing Helen, had a voice that sounded like Celine Dion’s whenever she spoke. This is a story that could have impressed Cecil B. DeMille, but I imagine he would have fallen asleep instead.
