Brad Pitt has been waiting for these roles, because it’s clear now that he's made some truly remarkable movies. *This* film and *Fury* stand apart in his filmography so far. What we get here is probably the most realistic and understated portrayal of the Iliad and the Trojan War imaginable. The characters feel authentic—as they likely would have been, if these people actually lived—and their reasons for doing what they do are generally well-explained, with just one exception. It's difficult to accept Achilles advising a child that taking risks will bring you fame lasting a thousand years. Even if he’s capable of such deep thought, it’s hard to imagine anyone accepting that idea, particularly in an ancient culture where most people are forgotten after they die, let alone remembered for so long. Other than that one issue, the events we see have believable explanations, without the fawning admiration present in Homer's work—though Odysseus still gets his due. This is easily, and I’d even say definitively, the most thrilling, realistic, and well-made version of the Trojan War and the Iliad to come from a major studio.
