Catherine Deneuve’s acting was a highlight in this comedic film with an unexpected twist. She portrays "Suzanne," who openly refers to herself as her husband's "trophy wife." Her spouse, "Robert" (played by Fabrice Luchini), is the owner of a local factory and a habitual adulterer. Their son, "Laurent" (Jérémie Renier), isn’t particularly invested in their affairs and has a girlfriend living in Paris; their daughter, "Joëlle" (Judith Godrèche), aspires to take over her father's business. The central plot revolves around that business when the factory workers stage a strike, and following an incident with the communist mayor of the town, "Babin" (Gérard Depardieu), “Robert” suffers a seizure. This is when "Suzanne" must assume responsibility for running the company, which was originally her father’s; it becomes apparent that she possesses considerable business acumen. The film depicts them exporting umbrellas to Indonesia in growing quantities. Upon recovering, "Robert" attempts to reclaim his position but discovers he has been outsmarted—his wife is now in charge and intends to remain so. What follows is a somewhat silly family comedy that feels as though it's improvising the plot. Certain family situations feel forced; there are hints of a past life for “Suzanne,” too, but the interactions between her and Depardieu, who isn’t utilized enough, still work well, and the ending showcases intelligent decision-making and professional attire. It functions like an episodic television program, yet it's enjoyable nonetheless.
