I really was hoping for something better after "Morbius," but about ten minutes into this lengthy and repetitive story, it became clear that wasn't going to happen. The film centers on a sophisticated computer program called “Ares,” who’s so advanced he makes the “Terminator” seem like “Barbie.” He’s practically unstoppable; able to break through any security measures, which makes him potentially very useful for military purposes. Meanwhile, another company is trying to crack the code of permanence—something that has eluded developers up until now. No matter how ingenious their inventions are, a corporate villain named “Dillinger” (Evan Peters) knows they all become obsolete after about thirty minutes, like Lego bricks. He suspects that his competitor, “Eve” (Greta Lee), might have found an answer and so he inserts “Ares” and his capable partner "Athena" (Jodie Turner-Smith) into her system, triggering a cyberspace showdown that pushes the limits and the "humanity" of everyone involved. I say everyone because for much of its existence, it feels like just a collection of pieces in a game. Unlike the original “Tron,” which came out roughly forty years ago, this one has very little plot and leans too heavily on the impressive visuals and fast-paced action instead of developing the characters caught up in their greedy and ethically dubious corporate dealings. It’s hard to say why Gillian Anderson is even here; Jeff Bridges looks like he should be off performing miracles, and the writing doesn't really matter, except for some psychological jargon leading up to an ending that brought to mind “Max” from Disney’s “Black Hole” (1979). There are a few nods to older video games with their zeroes and ones, but overall I found it to be a long and disappointing two hours.
