My kids and I watched this film a few weeks back. Being something of an enthusiast for the initial installment, having seen the sequel, and being interested in science fiction, computers, and special effects, I naturally felt compelled to view this one. I'd read some pieces suggesting it wasn’t particularly impressive, but I have to say I don’t agree with that assessment; I thought it was quite good. The fact that those professional critics at a famously negative website deemed it poorly made only confirmed my suspicion that it might actually be enjoyable. TRON is clearly intended to appeal to fans of science fiction, computers, and special effects, and in this respect, I believe it delivers. The various chase sequences and combat scenes were exciting, and when Athena unleashed her powerful weaponry, I was really into it. Furthermore, the narrative isn’t terrible either. There's not a lot of Hollywood's typical social commentary present, and the story is adequate for connecting all the special effects. There’s a fair amount of content designed to please fans, which I appreciate. I don’t understand why people consistently complain about this; if you have an established franchise, there’s no reason to stop providing what your audience wants. Sadly, many Hollywood executives seem unable to grasp this straightforward concept. Naturally, even though it's presented as science fiction, the scientific elements were abandoned in the first movie and that hasn’t changed here. It is an action/adventure film driven by special effects, and, as I mentioned, I really enjoyed it.
