This movie brought back memories of those old toys where Play-Doh would squirt out the top like hair—it felt very much designed to sell merchandise and fast food. The story follows a group of peaceful Trolls who have to leave their home when the Bergen show up, planning to eat them as part of a "trollstice" celebration. “King Peppy” and his relentlessly cheerful daughter, “Poppy,” guide their people to safety, but an unexpected encounter with their enemies forces “Poppy” and her friend “Branch” on a quest to save them from the “Chef’s” sharp knife and the new young "King Gristle." What follows is a string of adventures where they have to avoid being cooked—literally escaping from pots and flames—and try to persuade their captors that happiness isn't found in eating Trolls, unless they're made of chocolate. It will likely appeal to very small children because of the bright colors, some musical numbers, and just a touch of the kind of simple life lessons you’d find in a "Janet and John" reading book. I imagine it's something you’ll watch once, but probably won’t want to see again.
