I saw this movie initially as preparation for TROLL 2. Rating: B I’ve consistently admired Roar Uthaug’s ability to connect large-scale disasters with relatable human feelings, so I anticipated seeing that same approach applied to folklore in TROLL. What we ultimately receive is certainly a collection of familiar elements from Hollywood monster movies — the influence of GODZILLA and KING KONG can be sensed throughout— but Uthaug makes it special through a uniquely Norwegian feel. Although the story follows predictable patterns, and many of the secondary characters frequently make choices that are irritatingly illogical, the imagery is truly impressive, creating a real sense of size and power for the creature that surpasses numerous far more costly big-budget films. However, what really works for me in TROLL is its underlying meaning, which prevents it from being simply another movie about a monster. It’s not just about destruction; it's an exploration of the conflict between established customs and progress, where current industrial development literally stirs up forgotten memories. The film includes an interesting perspective on Norway’s conversion to Christianity, which erased older beliefs and portrays the creature not as evil, but as a sorrowful ruler fighting for territory that has been built upon. TROLL manages to transform a standard story into a surprisingly moving argument in favor of protecting the environment and cultural identity, serving as a reminder that some stories aren't meant to be overcome, but honored.
