2024 hasn't been kind to major studio releases, with only a handful of truly good movies surfacing among many forgettable ones. Trigger Warning, featuring Jessica Alba and Anthony Michael Hall, sadly falls into the latter category. It’s easily one of the worst films I’ve encountered, struggling under the weight of a confusing and disconnected story. The storyline in Trigger Warning is just plain baffling, with characters making strange choices that don't seem to make sense. Jessica Alba plays a special forces operative who, for some reason, stomps her feet loudly while attempting to move stealthily. This peculiar detail really hurts the believability of her character’s supposed skills and training. The action sequences throughout are full of oddities. In one moment, Alba's character can easily overpower three armed criminals much larger than herself; in another, she is quickly taken down by people who don't even seem to know what they're doing. These kinds of contradictions make it hard to get invested in the fight scenes. Anthony Michael Hall’s performance as the villain doesn’t help either. His character comes across as a cartoonish stereotype of an evil right-wing politician, lacking any real depth or complexity. What’s worse, the movie has way too many villains—somewhere between four and five—and it's never explained how they are connected to each other. This creates a jumbled narrative that is hard to follow. The film seems to borrow plot elements from other action movies but can’t manage to put them together in a sensible way. Each borrowed idea feels separate and doesn’t fit with the rest of what's happening, adding to the overall sense of chaos and lack of focus. For instance, there's an attempt to give Alba’s character a chance at redemption, but it is dropped without explanation, leaving her reasons for doing things unclear. Every person in the film seems boring and makes questionable decisions, which leads to a ridiculous ending where all the different plot threads crash together in a nonsensical way. Ultimately, Trigger Warning represents the kind of disappointing movie that has been common from studios this year. The confusing story, inconsistent action, and underdeveloped characters make it a frustrating experience. Jessica Alba and Anthony Michael Hall are not well-served by this film, which fails to provide any clear or enjoyable entertainment. It's best to skip this one, as there’s not much beyond confusion and frustration to be found.
