Kevin Bacon seems to be genuinely enjoying himself in this silly science fiction movie geared toward families. He and his friend "Earl" (played by Fred Bass) earn a living doing strange (and not particularly pleasant) jobs for the people around them, until they find out that something is hidden beneath the surface—something hungry. What follows are several amusing adventures as these characters, along with the recently arrived seismologist "Rhonda" (Finn Carter) and the local residents, attempt to remain just ahead of whatever is chasing them. The beginning does feel a little drawn out, but things pick up considerably once they get to the core of the situation; director Ron Underwood maintains a good pace with a spirited screenplay and solid performances from everyone involved. It's an enjoyable film, featuring some appealing acting—particularly the pairing of Michael Gross and Reba McEntire, who seem equipped to initiate and prevail in World War III—and it doesn’t depend too much on elaborate special effects; in that regard, it brings to mind a Hammer film! It’s obvious that everyone involved had a good time making this picture, and that feeling is infectious, so relax and let it put a smile on your face.
