“Tremors” now takes its place alongside films like “Gremlins” as part of a small group of movies suitable for families that also feature monsters. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward’s performances are strong, their characters displaying a lively dynamic as two arguing maintenance workers in Perfection, Nevada, which has a population of only 14 when giant, underground creatures called "graboids" attack (yes, the name is strange, but it somehow works within the film). Despite producing many inferior follow-ups, “Tremors” remains enjoyable due to its capable cast, well-constructed plot, and impressive special effects achieved through practical means.
