A small town located in the Southwest finds itself targeted by enormous creatures dwelling beneath the surface. The story involves two repairmen—played by Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward—who join forces with a seismologist (Finn Carter) and the local residents, including Michael Gross and Reba McEntire, to confront these massive underground predators that enjoy feasting on people. “Tremors,” released in 1990, shares similarities with “Gargoyles” from 1972, though it maintains a less serious atmosphere; there’s a certain lightness to the film, but it doesn't quite cross over into comedy territory. The performers are energetic and appealing, and the creatures themselves are creative and engaging. Still, their existence strains credibility because the hard desert terrain would need to possess the consistency of thick mud for such large beings to move so freely through it. If that issue can be dismissed, it’s an enjoyable monster movie with impressive visuals showcasing the desert landscape. However, its simplicity prevents it from holding up well after multiple viewings. “Gargoyles” is generally a better film because of its more mysterious, somber, and focused approach. Finn Carter stands out in a wholesome way, especially during a brief scene where her clothing is partially removed (laugh). Gross evokes Dennis Weaver’s style, while McEntire feels completely natural as the woman who knows how to use a gun. The movie had a quiet run in theaters but later gained popularity as a cult classic and spawned several sequels.
