Jackie Cooper delivers a captivating performance as the young “Jim Hawkins,” complemented by Wallace Beery’s compelling portrayal of the deceptive "Long John Silver," in Victor Fleming’s lively adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s nautical tale. It is “Jim” who unexpectedly becomes involved in a pirate scheme at his mother's inn when “Billy Bones” (Lionel Barrymore) bequeaths him a chart leading to a substantial treasure concealed on an isolated island. Managing to escape with his life, he seeks assistance from the doctor (Otto Kruger) and the talkative squire (Nigel Bruce) to secure the services of "Capt. Smollett" (Lewis Stone), and they set sail. The ship’s crew, however, wasn't chosen by the captain but rather by the one-legged “Silver,” who had previously served with the original possessor of the treasure and plans to recover it upon reaching the island, along with his formidable companions. Will young "Jim" and his allies survive long enough to retrieve the riches and outwit the villainous "Silver"? This remains a cherished childhood story for me, and Beery clearly invested himself fully in his role. The rest of the actors—including the clumsy Bruce, Charles McNaughton’s threatening “Black Dog,” and particularly Chic Sale as the eccentric "Ben Gunn"—contribute effectively, culminating in an ending filled with lighthearted antics. Adventure, swordplay, and some genuinely perilous pudding on the open ocean! It's hard to find fault with this.
