Ultimately, there’s nothing in common with Laugier’s masterpiece. _Martyrs_ conveys meaning through every aspect of every scene; conversely, that's precisely what happens with _Trauma_. The scenes in _Traumas_ appear primarily intended to be gory, disturbing, or simply disgusting, yet these elements don’t seem connected to the central narrative. Some sequences attempt artistic expression, but they just feel out of place. **About the plot** Regarding the plot: Roja introduces several intriguing details, like the titular Trauma that affects the antagonists. What's the connection between those four women? Why is it commonly known—and seemingly accepted—by residents and police that these men are psychopaths? And so on... This is where I felt particularly let down. The plot progresses in largely illogical ways; puzzle pieces are presented but rarely fit together. Rojas seems overwhelmed by his own ambition to create complexity, aiming for a mind-bending experience when everything resolves. However, with _Trauma_, you’ll be left with numerous unanswered questions and even more “But why?/what about…? ” thoughts. **The movie's production** One aspect of the film is worth noting: The special effects are quite good. There's not much else to say without giving away spoilers, but that SFX team deserves a raise! The cinematography and screenplay are somewhat inconsistent. At times they align with the quality of the effects, while other times they simply feel wrong—too shaky, cuts too abrupt, etc. The actors do their best work; the German translation/dubbing ranges from mediocre to resembling softcore pornography. **Final thoughts** If you're looking for gore (and nudity) and enjoyed _A Serbian Film_, then give this a try. Otherwise, I suggest watching something else.
