"Transsiberian" (2008) creates a sense of mounting tension as it unfolds on the Trans-Siberian Express. The story follows a couple doing missionary work in China—Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer—as they travel by train from Beijing to Moscow. Their interactions with another pair, played by Eduardo Noriega and Kate Mara, draw them into a situation involving a stern narcotics detective portrayed by Ben Kingsley. A family member once shared an experience he had while traveling in Russia during the Soviet era. He described how his journey deeper into the country felt like stepping back in time. On one occasion, turning around at a particular location resulted in him being stopped and detained by authorities. He recounted being taken to a stark room with a single overhead light for questioning, admitting that he feared being sent to a Siberian labor camp. This anecdote comes to mind because "Transsiberian" incorporates similar elements; it's a crime drama, suspense film, and thriller that shares the atmosphere and themes of “A Simple Plan” (1998), with touches reminiscent of “Runaway Train” (1985) and “Dr. Zhivago” (1965). While "Runaway Train" remains my preferred choice, I’m happy to consider "Transsiberian" alongside these films, even though it's a relatively unknown movie that failed at the box office—likely due to limited distribution. The film succeeds because it isn’t rushed; it takes time to develop the characters, and they are well-developed. Roy (Harrelson), for example, is a friendly Christian who seems unaware of the evil present in the world and tends to see the good in people. His wife, Jessie (Mortimer), has a troubled past but was drawn to Roy’s naivete. She sees aspects of her former self in Abby (Mara), creating a connection between them. Carlos (Noriega) is portrayed as a sophisticated rogue who excels at charming women. The movie builds to an exciting conclusion, which surpasses the similar plot twist in “A Simple Plan,” which I found unbelievable and somewhat cheesy. "Transsiberian" has a running time of 1 hour and 51 minutes and was filmed in Lithuania, Russia, and China. GRADE: A-
