The galaxy has countless planets, yet the battling Cybertronian factions – the "Autobots," considered the heroes, and the "Decepticons," the villains – have come to Earth pursuing a lost artifact. This "allspark" arrived on our planet long ago and had been unknowingly held by the US military’s capable “Section 7,” now under the direction of "Simmons" (played by John Turturro). It turns out there's a clue about where this device is located, hidden in the glasses worn by the grandfather of "Sam" (Shia LaBeouf), though he isn't aware of it himself. To safeguard him, the Autobots assign one of their own, the transforming vehicle "Bumblebee," to be his protector; however, he proves not very effective as a bodyguard and soon “Sam” along with his girlfriend “Mikaela" (Megan Fox, who delivers a rather stiff performance) get caught up in this action-heavy, robot-themed adventure. The lead actor is pleasant to look at and possesses some charm, but beyond that, the film feels strikingly unoriginal, consisting of a string of repetitive fight sequences where it's difficult to tell one robot from another. Their voices all sound muffled, as if they’re speaking into a microphone covered in fabric, and I gradually stopped caring about which robot would triumph over the other – you can sense this is just the beginning of an endless series designed for two main reasons: 1 - to revive Josh Duhamel's career and 2 - to promote a massive number of toys. While marketing has often driven successful movie spin-offs, this one feels particularly blatant in its commercial intentions. The plot isn’t strong and the characters, such as they are, lack any real depth. There's plenty of explosions, but at nearly two and a half hours long, it’s quite an endurance test.
