I have to admit, this one didn’t entirely miss the mark. In fact, I believe it may well be my top pick so far! The immediate reaction is skepticism when you realize Sir Anthony Hopkins is handling narration duties – seriously? But as this installment involving those nameless, mechanized warriors unfolds, there's a more developed narrative beneath the surface. Predictably, there’s an all-powerful device for them to locate and battle over, and this time around, Arthurian lore, Stonehenge, and a belted earl—played by Sir Anthony Hopkins—are brought into the mix. This film feels like it might be nearing an end as "Optimus" begins his pursuit of his deceptive creator, “Quintessa” (Gemma Chan), aiming for a confrontation that will permanently safeguard Earth. Meanwhile, “Cade” (still Mark Wahlberg) and “Lennox” (Josh Duhamel, clearly past his prime) are going through the motions of combat while ensuring the legendary staff of "Merlin" doesn't fall into the clutches of the "Decepticons." This one has a greater sense of self-awareness, is less severe, and takes itself less seriously compared to some of the previous entries. We’re still subjected to lengthy pronouncements from the increasingly grand “Prime,” but for me, at least, it had a more significant feeling of adventure. As typically happens, the acting—Laura Haddock doesn't fare well—isn't particularly strong; however, keep an eye out for Stanley Tucci, who seems eager to return after his previous appearance and makes a short cameo. It’s flawed and easily overlooked, and it should probably be the final one, but I found myself more invested in it than I expected.
