I wasn’t shocked to think that this, the fifth Transformers film, would likely be terrible. That feeling came especially after how bad the previous one turned out. To my surprise, though, it wasn't nearly as awful as I anticipated. I really don’t get why so many people consider this one of the worst films ever made. The professional reviewers, particularly those at Rotten Tomatoes, certainly do, but their opinions aren't something I put much stock in. It’s different when you hear it from regular moviegoers. It is a Transformers film and Michael Bay directed it; that sets the tone right away, so what did people expecting to complain actually want? Did they honestly believe Michael Bay would suddenly focus on things like the writing or anything other than giant robots, impressive visual effects, and explosions? I genuinely enjoyed this movie. Or rather, I enjoyed it considering it’s a Transformers film. The special effects were good, the robots were cool, even the bad jokes got a chuckle out of me. The connection to the Arthurian legend was interesting, and I thought Sir Edmund Burton and his unusual robot assistant were hilarious. I laughed when I saw the World War I tank Transformer; I just assumed the submarine Transformer would actually transform as well. Perhaps those who disliked this movie are missing the somewhat dim female lead character from earlier films. But personally, I appreciated that the characters in this film seemed more grown-up and demonstrated some intelligence. The plot is pretty decent for a Transformers movie—it might be considered weak if you were looking at it differently. It did mess with the timeline established in the first movies, though. And just being picky about details, the planes they used have a maximum operating altitude of 21,000 feet, not 12,000 feet. Overall, I had a good time watching this movie. Given how low my expectations were to begin with, I was very pleasantly surprised. It’s certainly much better than the fourth one.
