Is there any reason I would willingly sit through a movie lasting nearly three hours, or why I've given it a rating of three stars? It was available to rent without charge on Redox. I generally like Mark Wahlberg’s movies. I really enjoy *Bumblebee*. Do any of those things explain this? One thing that definitely doesn’t make sense is the plot. Does the story even matter anymore in these films? There are Transformers who are good, called Autobots, and there are Transformers who are bad, called Decepticons, and caught in the middle are foolish humans who turn on their own kind for money – usually it's the U.S. Government. But then a hero appears to change everything and convinces Optimus Prime (the leader of the Autobots) to fight one last battle (for what feels like the fourth or fifth time – I’ve lost track at this point), while a conventionally attractive woman runs around through explosions in very brief shorts. That should tell you all you need to know about the *Transformer* series. For this film, Shia LeBeouf is replaced by Mark Wahlberg and Megan Fox gives way to Nicola Peltz. And here’s the surprise…wait for it…Mark Wahlberg plays Nicola Peltz's DAD. That's right – her father. It just doesn't work, not even a little bit. Around 90 minutes into the movie, there’s a moment when it seems like everything will be resolved and I thought to myself: You know what? That wasn’t terrible. A pretty good action film, a bit cheesy at times but still watchable. But then the movie continues. And continues. For another 90 minutes. Basically, you're watching the same movie again, except instead of being set in Texas and Chicago, it takes place in China and Hong Kong. It’s too long, there are far too many explosions, and there are way too many American and Texas flags waving in the background. This film desperately needs someone to trim it down or maybe just put it out of its misery. Probably the latter. John Goodman and Ken Watanabe provide some welcome comic relief with their voices, but not much can truly redeem this movie. *Bumblebee* deserved better.
