It's remarkable to see faith in action, particularly when extraordinary events happen involving situations that seem impossible, often erasing any lingering doubts even among those who are very skeptical. Those who truly believe in this idea and find ways to apply it practically frequently experience blessings themselves, as demonstrated by the lone survivor of a plane crash in the Amazon rainforest. This young woman manages to live through the ordeal and later becomes an accomplished and well-regarded faith healer (played by Helena Zengel), tending to various illnesses at her charismatic father’s remote mission (superbly portrayed by Jeremy Xido) deep within the Brazilian jungle. However, can she have a similar effect on issues that extend beyond physical health? This question arises when illegal loggers encroach upon the land of local indigenous people, creating a disagreement that unintentionally involves both father and daughter. A complicated situation develops, putting everyone at risk, especially as unclear intentions and surprising information come to light. Director Pia Marais’s newest film carefully examines these issues from several perspectives, presenting the different aspects of this complex story with a consistent rhythm and avoiding any sense of confusion—a feat that keeps viewers engaged throughout. The movie also highlights the breathtaking beauty of the Amazon ecosystem, alongside the unacceptable damage being done to it, through visuals that are both gorgeous and disturbing. While some parts of the plot and shifts in the storytelling could have been improved, overall Marais has created a well-made film that addresses many subjects without feeling overstuffed. It prompts reflection on spiritual matters and our responsibility to protect the environment, showing how these two concepts connect, offering a complete perspective on life and our world from both a spiritual and practical viewpoint. “Transamazonia” surpassed my initial hopes, and I suspect many viewers will share that sentiment.
