The film’s quality isn't solely attributable to the engaging narrative and skillful writing but also to the exceptional casting choices. Hawke is well-suited for the role of the earnest yet driven rookie, while Washington delivers a truly remarkable performance as Alonzo Harris, placing him among the most memorable portrayals in cinema history, alongside Jon Voight’s Manny from "Runaway Train" or Robert Duvall's Col. Kilgore in "Apocalypse Now." There is a single noticeable element that feels somewhat forced, but this is common in movies and could have been considerably worse. While the action sequences are intense, the overall atmosphere remains grounded in reality. BOTTOM LINE: "Training Day" stands out as an outstanding urban thriller featuring Washington’s compelling performance. The film's depiction of events is harsh, unrefined, and uncompromising; therefore, it may not be suitable for all viewers.
