A group of college wrestlers from the United States find themselves on a questionable train headed to Odessa, Ukraine. It turns out that some members of the train’s staff have plans beyond just providing transportation. Thora Birch and Gideon Emery offer noteworthy performances among the cast. “Train” seems to blend elements of “Hostel,” “Borderland,” “Transiberian,” and even touches on aspects seen in "Turistas" and "The X-Files: I Want to Believe." It’s similar to “Transiberian,” but with a more extreme, graphic edge—what some might call ‘torture porn.’ Like most movies, this one exaggerates reality for entertainment or shock value. "Train" plays on the anxiety of being an outsider in Eastern Europe, such as Russia or Ukraine, and becoming vulnerable to people with names like Boris, Ivan, or Natasha. It’s no more likely to be insulting to those from Eastern Europe than “Deliverance” is to Southerners. Given the nature of this kind of film, there are some disturbing and unpleasant scenes, but that's part of what defines horror, especially in this specific subgenre; genuine scary movies are meant to frighten audiences. Ultimately, it’s a story about an adventure gone horribly wrong. On that front, "Train" succeeds. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 34 minutes and was filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria. GRADE: B
