Jacques Tati has conceived what looks like the perfect camper-van, and those in charge at “Altra” are eager to display it at an Amsterdam motor show, so he and his driver "Marcel" (Marcel Fraval) embark on a trip from Paris. It's clear right away that this won’t be simple; they quickly run out of gas! This is merely the beginning of several unfortunate events involving them, the surrounding traffic, their rather driven American marketing representative “Maria” (Maria Kimberly), and numerous other people—including customs officials who seem to enjoy thoroughly testing all the vehicle's modern features, many of which appear unnecessary even for a spy. The central question becomes whether they or the van will ever reach Amsterdam. Watching it brought "Dad’s Army" to mind. It’s full of jokes that are obvious from afar, causing you to wince in expectation, but still eliciting laughter when the familiar “if it can go wrong, it will” principle comes into play. Tati demonstrates excellent comedic timing with minimal dialogue, letting the visuals and some amusing special effects convey a collection of stories that entertainingly depict life on the road, as well as the experiences of this hapless pair whose every action seems to end in disaster. Simultaneously, their typically impatient and arrogant transatlantic counterpart gradually gains a bit of humility, something Kimberly portrays effectively; she, like everyone else involved, appears to be having a good time keeping things just this side of absurdity. It’s enjoyable entertainment.
