Timothy Woodward Jr. directed "Traded" in 2016, featuring Michael Paré as a determined father tracking his daughter (Brittany Elizabeth Williams), who has been taken by slavers and forced into prostitution. Trace Adkins portrays a threatening saloon owner, Kris Kristofferson appears as a bartender trying to atone for the environment he’s surrounded by, and Tom Sizemore embodies an unsavory buyer involved in the slave trade. It's clear this is a film made on a limited budget, which results in some noticeable issues with editing and continuity, but it compensates with a gripping narrative, a harsh atmosphere, graphic violence, and well-chosen filming locations, costumes, and music. Those who dislike darker, violent Westerns similar to “Hickok” (2017) or “6 Guns” (2010) probably won't enjoy this one. The storyline draws inspiration from "Hardcore" (1979) and "Taken" (2008), but without the backing of a major studio production. Viewers will encounter disturbing depictions of what women in saloons endured during that era. While there are surprising positive aspects, such as Marie Oldenbourg's performance as “Girl” in a substantial side story, its ending feels like a chance was lost. Despite the film’s darkness and brutality, moments of hope, reverence, and perhaps even happiness do surface occasionally. The movie has a running time of 1 hour 38 minutes and was filmed at Paramount Ranch, Agoura, California, and surrounding areas. Mark Esslinger wrote the screenplay. It earns a grade of B-.
