Occasionally when watching shows about old collectibles, you see someone bring out a toy still in its original packaging—and it ends up being worth more than their car—and I feel bad that I don’t have any from my own childhood left. I do remember always changing my mind about which one was best; whatever was the favorite one day wouldn't stay that way for very long. That’s what happens with cowboy "Woody." He’s “Andy’s” top choice, though he has quite a few favorites. Then comes one birthday and we are introduced to Space Ranger "Buzz Lightyear." He seems like a nice guy, but jealousy takes over, and “Woody” attempts to push his replacement out of sight by shoving him under the bed. This plan backfires when "Buzz" accidentally falls out the window. The other toys are shocked, forcing "Woody" to put aside his desire for Buzz’s laser and rescue his new competitor so they can both return home before the family moves! What follows is a series of amusing adventures, close calls, and they end up with another young boy who really wants to shoot “Buzz” into space. The voice acting from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen is lively and fun; Don Rickles’ performance as "Mr. Potato Head" occasionally hits a little too close to home for the adults watching, and all of it is accompanied by a good soundtrack and a clever script that creates many situations that pull in viewers of any age into this simple, fairly timeless story. It's notable, considering the year was 1995, just how many different toys this young boy owns—there’s no obvious emphasis on boys’ or girls’ toys, which is quite nice to see. The film moves along quickly and is a pleasure to watch, exploring themes of loyalty, friendship, and working together while also pointing out the downsides of jealousy and selfishness—and I really liked it.
