It features Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Charles Durning, Eli Wallach, Dana Carvey, Darlanne Fluegel, Alexis Smith and Monty Ash. The music’s by James Newton Howard and the cinematography is by King Baggot. Two elderly gangsters are freed from prison and discover they're having difficulty adjusting to life as older men in a world that has moved on – but they still won’t put up with any nonsense! "Couldn't take it anymore. People treating me like dirt ever since I got out of jail. Sweeping out toilets, scraping crud off dishes, my girlfriend tryin' to kill me with sex - and I'm dressing like Bozo the Clown, just to fit in! I don't want to fit in anymore" You really need to appreciate who’s on screen to fully understand the look they have. Douglas, Lancaster and Wallach are clearly enjoying themselves. They project masculinity and a world-weary understanding through older bodies, transforming jokes and frustration into something special onscreen; there’s a lot of enjoyment to be found in this fish-out-of-water story. It's certainly nostalgic and fanciful, naturally, and some of the more serious topics like how elderly people are treated don’t quite make as much impact, but it is still charming. How can you not enjoy seeing these older guys turn things around on would-be thieves and robbers? It's a delight to watch Wallach, who seems short-sighted, attempt an assassination he was hired for 30 years earlier! Perhaps more could have been done with the actors involved? Maybe. But it’s far from being awful, and people who like these performers will find plenty to appreciate watching them entertain us. 6/10
