Totally Killer combines elements of 1980s aesthetics with a playful slasher movie style. The concept isn’t flawed, and for the most part, it succeeds—though only in a basic way. The film is made well enough, but some essential cinematic components needed to propel the story forward feel somewhat inadequate. The 80's-inspired aspects, which are meant to be a central feature, don't have much personality. There isn’t a strong connection to the decade beyond occasional music from that era and a level of social attitudes that aren’t as common now. I believe they could have explored this further to truly capture an 80's feel. The slasher aspects are surprisingly well-executed, even including a plot twist I didn't anticipate. The performances are better than average too, which lifts the film slightly above other similar movies. It can be intense at times, but avoids being overly graphic, which seems fitting given its darkly comedic tone. Ultimately, it’s enjoyable if you appreciate lighter horror or slasher films, but it doesn’t create enough of an 80's atmosphere to make it truly memorable.
