"Total Recall" delivers an abundance of violence and gore, yet despite moments where the imagery feels excessive – such as Quaid’s, Melina’s, and Cohaagan's deaths by poisonous Martian air; the casualties among people caught up in shooting scenes; dismemberment; stabbings and impalements – the film is skillfully presented and consistently engaging due to Paul Verhoeven’s direction. The movie moves along at a good clip and remains enjoyable throughout. The special effects are also impressive, particularly the depictions of Mars, and the reactor sequences near the conclusion are visually striking. It's an exceptionally entertaining and well-crafted action film, clearly the product of professionals in a demanding field.
