This film might be my top pick alongside "Predator" (1987) when considering Arnold Schwarzenegger’s work. The story centers around him ("Quaid"), who gets a seemingly innocent memory implant of a Mars vacation he never actually took, and then his life rapidly begins to fall apart. Even his girlfriend, "Lori" (played by Sharon Stone), turns out to be trying to kill him, and he finds himself targeted from multiple directions. The film then follows his quest to uncover the reason behind this, deciding that with the assistance of a video recording of himself, he needs to journey back to Mars to figure things out. My only real complaint is Ronny Cox’s performance as "Cohaagen," which feels particularly weak even though his character becomes significant later on; otherwise, it's an action-filled and skillfully directed showcase for Schwarzenegger at the peak of his abilities. It was among the first movies I remember experimenting with timelines. The film maintains a sense of uncertainty about when events occurred or if they happened at all—something Paul Verhoeven establishes and carries throughout. Arnie gets to deliver some amusing lines, and the special effects improve the movie without overshadowing it. While it has aged somewhat, and some of the sets appear a little stiff, after thirty-plus years, it holds up remarkably well and is definitely worth watching.
