Burgess Meredith acts as host for this collection of four horror stories, all taking place within the setting of his fairground show. He requests £5 from each of four individuals to gain access to a hidden area where he guarantees they will witness something unforgettable. Concealed behind the curtain is what seems to be a full-sized doll – Fate Atropos – and each person experiences a story that exposes the flaws beneath their carefully constructed public image, involving two men and two women. The individual stories are brief and straightforward; while perhaps somewhat conventional, especially given the presence of moral lessons, there are still solid performances from actors like Peter Cushing, Jack Palance, and John Standing, which make the character portrayals – and what they get in return – engaging. I found the initial segment most appealing, featuring a short role for Maurice Denham’s “Uncle Roger” and a sinister cat reminiscent of Azazel, but each installment has its own ominous messages to convey. The film's production values are typical, leaning towards being overly dramatic with music and occasionally having too much dialogue, yet it remains an enjoyable series of mysteries in the vein of "Tales of the Unexpected."
