This eighty-three minute live action cartoon comes courtesy of Pepsi. Seriously, Pepsi, apparently the beverage of choice for a new generation. Also, Mountain Dew—do the Dew! And Doritos...I can’t quite recall their slogan, but they were tasty! Ford (Martin Henderson), a motorcycle enthusiast and generally irritating gearhead, has just returned from Thailand, where he spent six months trying to find himself and avoiding legal trouble stemming from drug charges. He reconnects with his former girlfriend Shane (Monet Mazur), who was bothered by FBI agents McPherson (Adam Scott) and Henderson (Justina Machado) searching for Ford. Villainous Henry (Matt Schulze) is also after Ford, wanting some motorcycles back. Trey (Ice Cube) and his motorcycle crew recently rejected a drug deal proposed by Henry, which had been arranged through Trey's irresponsible brother Junior (Fredro Starr), who ends up being killed by Henry. China (Jamie Pressly), Henry’s unsettling Goth girlfriend, accuses Ford of the murder. Ford, along with two forgettable companions and his equally unremarkable girlfriend, then embarks on a desert ride toward Los Angeles, pursued by both the police and Trey's gang. If you can withstand a throbbing headache and manage to finish it, there are some worthwhile aspects. Martin Henderson is believable as a flawed leading man; he brought to mind Kurt Russell’s performance in "Big Trouble in Little China." Ice Cube delivers an impressive unhappy expression—you really buy into his displeasure. Pressly shines as China despite having a limited role. Adam Scott provides plenty of laughs as the unconventional McPherson. However, some of the action sequences have to be seen to believe; others defy belief even after viewing. The whole film feels like one extended video game, where common sense is abandoned in favor of outrageous stunts and a plot that my seven-year-old could easily invent. It might have been better if I thought everyone involved was in on some kind of elaborate joke, subtly acknowledging the audience, but there were too many missed opportunities and overly serious performances to suggest it’s meant to be taken lightly. The ridiculous product placement could have been handled with a sense of humor like in "Wayne's World 2," yet it comes across as sincere. Ultimately, “Torque” is just as loud and irritating as the motorcycles themselves. I did find a few good things here and there, but my headache hasn’t subsided enough for me to recommend this movie.
