I have to admit, I found this film quite underwhelming. The plot revolves around stolen gold that's been taken again and concealed by “Tornado,” who’s part of a father/daughter Japanese puppetry act traveling through the English countryside in the late 1700s. "Sugar" (Tim Roth) and his crew originally had the gold, but while they paused to see the show, a young thief (Nathan Malone) snatched it back, with “Tornado” (Kôki) witnessing the event. When the gang realizes what’s happened, chaos erupts, so she hides both the boy and the stolen goods in their wagon, and they head off. It doesn't take long for the men to figure out what's occurred, and they begin pursuing the slow-moving performers, leading to a rather unpleasant confrontation. Meanwhile, “Little Sugar” (Jack Lowden) is growing weary of his father’s commands and has his own ideas about getting his hands on the money—which naturally sets up a clash with his stern parent. Now we have a man trying to reclaim his fortune, a son seeking independence, and a woman trained in samurai techniques seeking retribution. It seems like it should be an exciting adventure. Unfortunately, one actress doesn't quite come across as believable, there’s excessive wandering through the countryside that constantly resets the situation, and the film really lacks momentum. The production clearly wasn’t lavish, but even so, a more gradual unfolding of events could have added some depth to the characters. It feels very disjointed, and while the filmmakers do occasionally jump between different points in time to vary the storytelling, too many people appear briefly only to disappear again. It does manage to create an atmosphere of hardship and lawlessness in rural areas, but as it nears the end, everything follows a fairly obvious route to its resolution. No one feels fully utilized here, and while the somber tone is effectively portrayed, the story ultimately doesn’t quite live up to expectations.
