Roland Young is really the star here, even though Cary Grant and Constance Bennett are listed first. He plays a meticulous and somewhat dominated bank manager who must manage his irresponsible shareholders, George (Grant) and Marion (Bennett). Their lives take an unexpected turn when they crash their car! Unfortunately for him, they return, not in a frightening way—he eventually gets accustomed to their ghostly appearances—but rather in a fashion that will encourage him to relax and enjoy himself more with his devoted but reserved wife (Billie Burke). Alan Mowbray’s butler, Wilkins, completes the group of five who keep this pleasant story moving along amusingly, just on the edge of broad comedy. Naturally, these playful spirits use their abilities to mortify and irritate their target, and the uncomplicated visual effects are effective as we watch a man skillfully manipulated while putting up a decent fight. The writing provides plenty of amusement, and with Burke also delivering a delightfully scatterbrained performance, this highlights Young’s talent for reacting to comedic situations and witty exchanges; it has a similar feel to something like “Blithe.”
