A lighthearted story about spirits in an agreeable afterlife. George and Marion Kerby enjoyed indulging in life’s pleasures, embracing every opportunity for fun with a carefree attitude. While driving home one night after overdoing it, they were involved in an accident that killed them instantly; however, their spirits remained on earth, seemingly needing to accomplish something worthwhile before moving on. Then comes Cosmo Topper, a friend and coworker of the Kerby’s, who unexpectedly becomes the focus of their mischievous attention! Adapted from Thorne Smith's novel "The Jovial Ghosts," this is a genuinely enjoyable film that moves along at a brisk pace. At just ninety minutes long, it doesn't feel drawn out. It would have been disappointing if it had devolved into just one joke—how many ghost gags could you possibly fit in without becoming repetitive? Fortunately, the creators of this lively entertainment managed to keep everything fresh and consistently amusing. The special effects are impressive for 1937, though certainly not flawless; but given the film’s tone of humor and playfulness, they add a certain endearing quality. Roland Young delivers an exceptional performance as Cosmo Topper, reacting with disbelief to one absurd situation after another, effortlessly carrying the movie. Constance Bennett is wonderful as Marion, and Cary Grant provides his signature comic flair as George. It's interesting that Bennett was only cast in the role of Marion when Jean Harlow had to drop out a month before filming began. Similarly, Grant replaced W.C. Fields in the part of George, and it’s hard to imagine what the film would have been like with those original choices. However, I can hardly picture any way to make this movie better because Grant and Bennett's chemistry is truly remarkable. From one comical situation to the next, "Topper" is a remedy for feeling down, whether it involves brawling with police or turning a hotel upside down; it’s simply a delightful slice of 1930s comedy. 8/10
