The story centers on Joan Blondell, playing "Gail," who is living with her friend "Ann Carrington" before meeting an untimely end. Following her death, her spectral form attaches itself to their next-door neighbor, "Cosmo Topper," portrayed by Roland Young, in an effort to uncover the truth behind what happened. It turns out to be a rather clever comedy thriller; Billie Burke is wonderfully exaggerated as "Mrs. Topper," and Rochester Anderson’s portrayal of the chauffeur contributes his characteristic playful personality. The mystery itself feels almost secondary—this film prioritizes its characters, with a touch of danger introduced by George Zucco ("Dr. Jeris") and Donald MacBride in the role of the somewhat naive and ineffective "Detective Roberts." This results in a briskly moving drama featuring all the familiar haunted-house elements like hidden passages, bookcases that shift on their own, and concealed entrances designed to create suspense, alongside some sharp writing that pokes fun at nearly everyone. The film’s length is excessive; trimming it by around thirty minutes would improve its flow considerably, but even so, it provides a few moments of amusement.
