GenerationofSwine on Top Gun: Maverick

10/10 · Jan 16, 2023

The unusual thing about this film is that, according to instructions, you’re really not meant to enjoy it; IMDb will even prevent you from posting positive reviews. Amazon, which owns the platform, seems to be manipulating audience feedback, and YouTube did something similar with the promotional material. That reaction makes sense when you think about it. *Maverick* is a patriotic action film featuring a male protagonist who isn’t portrayed as foolish. The white characters aren't villains, and America isn’t depicted negatively. It's a sequel that respects the original movie’s heroes and its audience. It’s simply a well-made, nonpolitical action movie from beginning to end. Therefore, you’re expected to dislike it because it goes against current Hollywood trends. That’s also why it became such a significant box office success—earning numbers that would have been considered enormous before the pandemic—because it's the kind of film audiences actually desire, and some platforms are trying to suppress that fact. It’s not supposed to be known that people like it or that filmmakers should create movies people want to see. Everything seems designed to be a form of propaganda now. However, here's something you might not realize: if this film had been released in the 1980s, it probably wouldn’t have fared well. It isn't as thrilling an action movie as those from that era; honestly, it doesn’t measure up to many of the classic films in the genre. But then it was released in 2022, and everything has shifted. Nowadays, any film is labeled racist or overly progressive. So what you have here is a movie that's considered good—by contemporary standards—simply because it isn’t the low-quality content Hollywood is forcing audiences to accept.
