KVNNBH on Top Gun: Maverick

10/10 · Aug 25, 2022

Looking for a classic, over-the-top, totally 80s action movie that’s fun and easy to get into? A film that really makes you want to be in a theater? Let me introduce one of my favorite films from 2022: TOP GUN MAVERICK. _**"Set 30 years after its predecessor, it follows Maverick's return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (also known as U.S. Navy-Fighter Weapons School - "TOPGUN"), where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger pilots, among them the son of Maverick's deceased best friend Lieutenant Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, USN."**_ —Wrathzo I honestly didn’t think a sequel to an 80s movie could be better than the original. I figured it would end up like *The Matrix Resurrections* or the *RoboCop* remake – just not good. But I was completely wrong; this film is what awesome cinema looks like. Let's talk about the story. It’s not a complicated plot, and some of its structure seems familiar to those who saw the first one. But it isn't an exact copy. What I mean is that Peter Craig borrowed some ideas from the original for certain scenes—I think it’s meant as a tribute—but the context gives them much more depth. The music is fantastic too. Lorne Balfe did an incredible job redoing the *Top Gun* theme... It's amazing to hear that music again! And I have to give props to OneRepublic and Lady Gaga for creating such a great soundtrack. Finally, the cinematography and special effects are something else entirely. This might be the first time I’ve left an IMAX theater and thought, "I only paid ten dollars for this? I should have spent more." The sound design, the real action sequences with the fighter jets, the intense visuals—it all comes together to create a true masterpiece. It's been years since I felt so absorbed in a movie. Basically, this is what movie theaters are for. Go see it on IMAX. You won’t be disappointed.
