It feels like this is precisely what American cinema ought to be. I’ll admit, I was pretty much convinced Hollywood had run its course. The constant push of progressive messaging made me think the US film industry didn't have anything worthwhile left to give, and then *Top Gun: Maverick* arrived. It’s a straightforward, skillfully crafted military action movie that revitalizes the standard approach and remains true to it. The entire production feels refined. It brings the original from the eighties up-to-date with flair and energy, featuring truly outstanding performances from Tom Cruise and everyone involved. I don't care for NATO or American exceptionalism, but this film is so well done that I found myself cheering along regardless. This is what entertainment should be like... 10/10
