This _Top Gun: Maverick_ sequel surpasses the initial movie by a significant margin. The performances from everyone involved are stronger, and there's a deeper emotional connection established between at least two of the central figures. Even the humor feels more effective this time around. However, the film’s persistent inclination to mirror the original’s structure ultimately feels limiting rather than nostalgic. It almost seems like the sequel underscores some of the weaknesses present in the first movie—a detail that might have been best left unaddressed. Considering its impressive box office success over Memorial Day weekend, _Top Gun: Maverick_ is a tremendously exciting continuation with action scenes unlike anything seen before, and it appears to be precisely what audiences wanted after waiting more than three decades.
