I’ve been seeing previews for this movie for what feels like ages, and thankfully, it lived up to the anticipation. The film centers around some genuinely impressive aerial shots that lead into intense dogfights and a comforting sense of familiarity. Tom Cruise fits perfectly into his role as the aging – and unafraid to show it – “Top Gun” pilot who is brought in by a doubting admiral to train a new group for a dangerous mission involving an underground uranium facility. The recruits arrive, brimming with youthful energy, and he has to get them ready, which proves challenging because of "Rooster" (Miles Teller), the son of his deceased friend "Goose," whose death occurred back in 1986. He also gets another chance at a relationship with bar owner “Penny” (Jennifer Connelly), all while being watched over by his former wingman, now a struggling retired admiral "Kazansky" (Val Kilmer). To be straightforward, the plot isn’t particularly groundbreaking; there are some surprises and moments of levity, but it lacks real suspense. You pretty much know how things will resolve. Nevertheless, everyone performs well, the film moves along quickly – except for the scenes with Connelly, which noticeably slow down – and the visuals from inside and outside the aircraft are captivating and varied. Even the typical over-the-top action sequences are toned down; this is a more sophisticated portrayal of the US military, showcasing their competitive spirit alongside their intelligence—and I genuinely appreciated it. See it in theaters – hold off on watching it at home.
