I’m not sure I connected with this film, and it says something about Peter Simonischek’s performance that I felt that way. Ultimately, I didn’t enjoy it. His character's daughter, "Ines" (played by Sandra Hüller), had built a successful career for herself, creating distance between them. He attempts to mend things by traveling to Bucharest, where she works alongside boss/lover "Gerald" (Thomas Loibl). “Winfried” considers himself humorous, but his jokes only serve to embarrass and annoy his daughter, mocking the often-harsh realities of her job. This further damages their already strained relationship, leading him to devise an even more outlandish plan. He creates a fictional character – the one named in the title – who claims to be Gerald’s “life coach.” Wearing a poorly fitted suit and a remarkably unconvincing wig, he begins disrupting her professional life. She faces a choice, and she decides that confronting him is her best option; what follows involves them verbally clashing toward an ending I found entirely foreseeable. While Simonischek's acting certainly leaves an impression, the whole thing felt too far-fetched for my taste. He’s completely different from his daughter – his quirks standing in such sharp contrast to her career ambitions that it all seemed overly and occasionally painfully artificial. For a significant portion of the film's latter half, she appears nude while he wears a gorilla suit. It’s surreal, certainly, but I didn’t grasp its purpose. It wasn't amusing, and given how much she's supposedly accomplished, she would have likely dismissed him long before this point. Sometimes you need to be in the right mindset to appreciate something so unusual – and I simply wasn’t on the same page as director Maren Ade for this one. However, it does demonstrate Hüller’s versatility; she seems capable of anything and is worth seeing for that alone.
