This western possesses a distinct sense of realism. The story unfolds during a period when legal structures were starting to establish order in what was previously a chaotic frontier, centering on Wyatt Earp (played by Kurt Russell), who simply desired a tranquil life in Tombstone, Arizona. However, he soon discovers that the town’s residents have different ideas about how things should be. The arrival of his brothers, Virgil (Sam Elliott), Morgan (Bill Paxton), and his longtime companion "Doc" Holliday (Val Kilmer) sets up an unavoidable clash with the group known for their red sashes. The movie prioritizes character development and narrative progression, which isn't to suggest it’s slow; instead, it permits the story to unfold naturally as suspense builds toward the famous gunfight at the OK Corral. While Russell might not have been the ideal casting choice—though he occasionally evoked Gene Hackman—Kilmer delivered a surprisingly strong performance, as did Stephen Lang in his portrayal of the deceptive Ike Clanton. Narrated by Robert Mitchum and including a fleeting appearance by Charlton Heston at the very end, the film is thoughtfully put together, with an even rhythm, and offers a unique, affecting (and occasionally brutal) depiction of a time coming to a close.
