The familiar story of the famous lawman is told once more, this time with Kurt Russell in the lead role. With Val Kilmer, Sam Neill, and Bill Paxton joining the cast, it might not immediately suggest a top-tier production, but the actors work together remarkably well; somehow, the film transcends what its individual elements would seem to promise. The sense of camaraderie and loyalty between the Earps and Doc Holliday comes across as authentic, and Kilmer seems to enjoy playing the part of Holliday, a man who is both frail and full of energy. Powers Booth and Michael Biehn are also memorable antagonists, with their scenes together being especially well-written, and the shootout sequences directed in the style of Peckinpah are exceptionally done. The confrontation at the OK Corral stands out as one of the finest depictions ever put on film. There are moments where it veers into overly sentimental territory—Morgan’s death is a key example—and the ending feels somewhat hurried and relies too much on quick cuts, but overall, it's an enjoyable piece of classic popular entertainment that proves far more captivating than Kevin Costner’s self-important offering from the same year.
