The transition from video game to movie with Tomb Raider is remarkably successful, although it’s clear that a great deal had to be compressed into its runtime. Going into this film, I held high hopes, and those expectations were fully met. It proved to be an enjoyable experience from start to finish; Alicia Vikander brings a sense of vulnerability to the character of Lara, which is a deliberate reference to the 2013 game reboot that serves as the movie's foundation. The complicated dynamic she has with her father was fairly easy to anticipate, but it wasn’t excessive and remains an important part of Lara’s narrative. Conversely, the action begins immediately, which I appreciated because the sequences were thrilling and characteristic of Lara Croft. She utilizes tools, solves puzzles, navigates traps, confronts adversaries, and encounters impressive set designs – all instantly familiar to those who have played the games. As others have noted regarding the recent installments in the series, Tomb Raider presents a somewhat contradictory portrayal of Lara Croft: simultaneously a person struggling with inner turmoil and an efficient killer. Throughout the games, her actions are always about survival, and that balance felt appropriate here as well, with Alicia Vikander embodying the necessary resolve for the part. What resonated most was my ability to connect with the film through my own experience playing all of the games—the airplane above the waterfall, the spinning spikes, and later, the falling floor were all particularly engaging. I would happily see it again, ideally multiple times!
