It's hard to find much wrong with the “Tom and Jerry” movie, currently available on HBO Max, because it manages to avoid being completely bad. The animation is vibrant, the actors provide cheerfully silly performances, and the film respects the spirit of the original cartoon. While not particularly hilarious or inventive, the narrative—centered around a celebrity wedding disrupted and a fancy New York hotel hiring a cat to get rid of a mouse—sets up some entertaining chaos. Combining traditional animation with live action produces effects that are surprisingly well-done. The cast members (including Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Pallavi Sharda, and Colin Jost) do a commendable job acting alongside their animated counterparts, and the cartoonish aspects recall the classic Tom and Jerry cartoons. The story revives the conflict between the two characters while bringing it up to date for today's viewers. The slapstick and visual jokes are responsible for most of the laughs, but that’s about all the humor there is. There's also a fair amount of juvenile bathroom humor and some odd plot developments (the movie doesn’t really try to move beyond certain familiar stereotypes) which might make some grown-ups uncomfortable. “Tom and Jerry” isn’t anything special, but it’s not terrible either. It offers enough to keep most children amused for a while.
