CinemaSerf on Tom at the Farm

7/10 · May 20, 2026

The film begins with "Tom" (Xavier Dolan) entering a farmhouse without permission. Soon after, "Agathe" (Lise Roy), the home’s owner, arrives. She greets him as her son's friend—a friend she believes has just missed the funeral. Unbeknownst to her, he was actually his lover; however, her other son, "Francis" (Pierre-Yves Cardinal), is aware of this hidden relationship and openly expresses his disapproval during the night. Despite Francis’s disdain, Agathe enjoys having Tom around, and with work to be done on their farm, which supports 45 cows, he begins to pick up some skills while Francis engages in a progressively more aggressive and controlling behavior. At first, this has an unsettling impact, but it doesn't take long for Tom (and the audience) to realize that Francis may not be who he seems. The situation becomes even more complicated when "Sarah" (Evelyne Brochu) appears pretending to be her deceased son’s girlfriend, and it looks like things between the two young men are headed towards a climactic end. Aside from his dyed blonde hair, did anyone else notice how much Dolan resembled Robert Downey Jnr? Regardless, he delivers one of his strongest performances as a man struggling with personal trauma alongside Cardinal's character, who manages to portray both anger and vulnerability in a way that takes over the film, especially as the psychological dynamics between them develop into something subtly homoerotic. The story offers a somber look at human nature, but I found it strangely captivating and demonstrates the many forms grief can assume.
