John Chard on Pearl Harbor

5/10 · Sep 25, 2014

Right off the bat, there’s something questionable about how this movie handles history, and it's hampered by weak writing, casting choices, and an excessive runtime. While a group of supporting actors aren't utilized well, the production team seemed to aim for a large-scale spectacle in the vein of *Titanic*, but fell short of their goal. The attack on Pearl Harbor is genuinely exciting and suspenseful; however, it leaves you feeling disconnected from the central characters and uninterested in their journeys. It’s not a complete disaster—moments like those showing nurses struggling within the hospital during the assault are moving—and there's an overt patriotism mixed with romance that suggests the filmmakers were trying to evoke genuine emotion, even if it left me emotionally drained. Nevertheless, considering the considerable investment of time and money, it's hard not to feel disappointed as the film stretches past three hours. Maybe comparing it to *Titanic* isn’t a fair measure for this kind of movie; many have criticized that film over the years despite initial praise. But *Pearl Harbor* simply lacks substance to even qualify as enjoyable escapism, even when you factor in some expected action sequences during its lengthy final act. 5/10
