CinemaSerf on Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass

5/10 · May 24, 2026

I went into this with real anticipation because the premise seemed fun: "Jerry" attempting to pilfer artifacts from a museum while "Tom," a new security guard, tries to stop him! Following some fairly amusing action sequences, the resulting commotion triggers an elaborate and enigmatic compass, suddenly sending our pair to ancient China’s “Golden City.” That's where any promise of enjoyment quickly fades as we are introduced to a banished god and his phoenix assistant, both exiled from heaven for misplacing that very same device. They’ve spent nearly three hundred years searching for it, so their chances of returning home finally seem within reach. However, they aren't the only ones seeking it—"Mega Rat" and his crew are also aware of its magical properties and will stop at nothing to obtain it. It is this villain who persuades "Jerry" to assist him while simultaneously outsmarting "Tom," but when he proves to be quite aggressive, it appears that old rivalries must be set aside if they’re going to recover the compass and survive. Aside from a few snippets of the original cartoon's theme song, this doesn't really resemble “T&J” at all. Instead, it’s an overstuffed collection of CGI-heavy situations that are frequently so chaotic that it's difficult to follow what is happening or who is speaking to whom. I usually enjoy oriental fantasy animations with mystical powers and dragons, but this one doesn’t develop the mythology much and offers a very basic story and characters that I simply found irritating—it’s clear the rat picked up some techniques from Alfred Molina’s performance in "Spiderman 2" (2004). There's just no heart to it; none of the original humor that distinguished these films and made them enjoyable. By the time it concluded, I felt like this was a profound waste of potential.
