I was intrigued by the prospect of a Tolkien film, but after watching it, I’m honestly puzzled as to who this movie was intended for. It's an incredibly predictable and tired biopic, dutifully covering every expected beat in the genre. I can’t grasp why filmmakers feel compelled to apply this same structure to the story of everyone who has ever lived and been adapted for a screenplay. The film is tedious, and it feels completely overdone. I don’t see any demand for a movie that looks at J. R. R. Tolkien's life, particularly when he transitioned from being somewhat disliked at an elite school to becoming more accepted there. It doesn’t focus on his time writing the most well-known fantasy series ever created, nor does it delve into his experiences during wartime—or even spend a reasonable amount of time showing that aspect of his life, maybe only around six minutes total through brief flashbacks. His relationship with C. S. Lewis is also unexplored, as is his enrollment in codebreaking school. Instead, we get a young Tolkien who isn’t particularly engaging and seems rather pretentious for someone supposedly from humble beginnings. The movie does include some nods to his later writing, introducing a touch of fantasy, but it's so hesitant about this promising aspect that it suggests old J.R.R. wouldn’t have conceived of a single concept for Lord of the Rings without outside inspiration landing in his lap—another tired trope. _Final rating:★★ - It had some elements I enjoyed, but the overall result was disappointing._
